User Guide - iOS Device Setup
This guide will review how to configure your iOS device settings for optimal performance with Smartwebs applications
Optimal iPad Setup
![]() |
There are two types of mobile devices:
"Wi-Fi only" models
which DO NOT have a GPS chip/built-in GPS capability
and
"Wifi + Cellular" models
which DO have built-in GPS chips and GPS location capability*
*Use of GPS tracking does not require a data plan
|
When choosing your device, consider the following
- Recommended: two most recent generations of each iPad model (iPad, iPad Pro, iPad Mini) or iPhone (iPhone X, SE, XS, XR, 11, 12)
- The newer the device, the better. Apple stops providing updates to older devices with each software version; having a new device avoids this problem.
- Want to use mapping and GPS tracking? Choose a "wifi + cellular" device.
- Apps available on the iTunes App Store
- Smartwebs Mobile Online: used with an active (wifi/cellular) data connection.
- Smartwebs Mobile Offline: used when device's data connection is poor, unstable or out of range.
- Note about iOS updates
- Apple forces users to upgrade to the latest iOS version each time a major update is released (for example, upgrading from iOS 17.3.0 to iOS 17.3.1).
- When this occurs, we ask that all users delay updating their devices until we can verify that all Smartwebs apps are compatible with the latest iOS version.
- Smaller updates are not a problem and users can apply them as desired (for example, updating from iOS 17.2 to iOS 17.3).
Initial iOS Device Setup
Before starting your compliance drive, please follow these configuration steps to prevent device and app issues in the field
All of these configuration settings are found under the "Settings" menu of your device
1. Install the Smartwebs apps you would like to use from the iTunes App Store.
2. Go to Settings > General > Restrictions > Enter password if prompted
If restrictions are enabled and you notice that Safari, Camera, Installing Apps, or Deleting Apps are not all enabled (as seen in the screenshot in step 2), we need to turn these on for Smartwebs apps to work.
If any of these are disabled, proceed to step 3. Otherwise, skip ahead to step 4.
3. Tap the Enable Restrictions button to disable restrictions temporarily and enable these items. You can Enable Restrictions again after these four items are turned on.
4. Go to Settings > Privacy > Location Services and make sure Location Services is enabled generally, and also enable Location Services for Smartwebs (mobile online app) and Smartwebs Offline to "While Using".
4. Go to Settings > Privacy > Photos and make sure that all options are enabled for your installed Smartwebs apps.
5. Back in the Privacy menu, go to Privacy > Camera and make sure all options are enabled for your installed Smartwebs apps.
7. You can also configure the device to automatically turn off its display and lock itself after a certain amount of time has passed.
We strongly recommend doing this since it will make your device and its data more secure.
To do this, go to Settings > General > Auto-Lock and select your desired auto-lock time
Map View and Navigation/Tracking
When using the Map View on any Smartwebs app, tracking is turned off by default so the initial view will be centered on your currently selected street in the Address List and NOT on your current location.
In this example, notice that the Map View is centered on 1900 Blackjack Cove- the same street we have selected in the Address List.
In order to see the units actually near you, you must tap on the Start Tracking button in the top left corner of the Map View interface. A blue icon will appear at your location on the map.
Whenever Tracking is turned on, the Map View will ALWAYS be centered on your location and NOT on the unit/street you currently have selected in the Address List.
You will be unable to move the Map View manually until Tracking is turned off.
Troubleshooting
Are you experiencing white screens, slow loading, freezing, or glitches within the Smartwebs Offline app?
Please follow these steps:
1. Leave the Smartwebs Offline app and view the active app carousel by double-tapping your Home button.
2. Swipe up on the Smartwebs Offline to terminate the app.
3. Re-open the application as normal.
4. DO NOT- Redownload the association as this will override any violations created during the drive, and will download the association as no new violations were given.
